I use iSubtitle on the Mac to attach soft subs to MP4 files without the need to re-encode the video. I just open the video, import the SRT file, and save the file - done. All the advice I've seen regarding adding soft subs for MP4 include either keeping the subs separate (doesn't work with Apple TV, which I use to watch them) or using Handbrake.
